Consultant Obstetrician & Subspecialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine”
I am a consultant obstetrician working in Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital in Belfast. I graduated in 1991 after undergraduate medical training at Queen’s University of Belfast. My initial training in obstetrics and gynaecology was in hospitals throughout Northern Ireland and I obtained Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1996. My main interest was always in obstetrics and after I obtained my MD for a thesis on pre-eclampsia I decided to subspecialise in Fetal and Maternal medicine – or High Risk obstetrics and gained the Diploma of Advanced Obstetric Ultrasound awarded by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal College of Radiologists in 1998. This lead to a further 3 years as a subspecialty training fellow in St Michael’s Hospital Bristol where I had extensive experience in ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, labour ward critical care, antenatal care of women with medical problems and other h igh risk pregnancies, for examp le – multiple pregnancies, fetal abnormality, poor fetal growth in utero and women with previous complicated pregnancies. During my time in Bristol I was also a Lecturer in Obstetrics in The University of Bristol and was able to further my research work in pre-eclampsia as well as being closely involved with Undergraduate medical training in Obstetrics.
I obtained my Certificate of Completion in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and subspecialisation in Maternal and Fetal Medicine in 2004. I returned to Belfast in 2005 and was appointed as a Consultant/Senior Lecturer in Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital (RJMH) and Queen’s University of Belfast. In 2007 I began to work as a solely NHS Consultant and although no longer formally attached to QUB I still enjoy teaching medical students and carrying out research. I also remain an external examiner in Bristol University. In RJMH my main areas of interest are antenatal care/labour ward/ultrasound scanning and prenatal diagnosis in the Regional Centre for Fetal Medicine/multiple pregnancy and cardiotocograph training. I am lead clinician for antenatal care in RJMH.

including early pregnancy scans, fetal anatomy scans, fetal growth scans, 3 & 4D scans - prenatal diagnosis including nuchal translucency, fetal cardiac scans, chorionic villous sampling, amniocentesis postnatal care including neonatal examination of your new baby Although private obstetric care in Northern Ireland is for antenatal care/neonatal examination and does not include presence of the obstetrician at the delivery I will try my best to be present - I especially enjoy delivering babies of women/couples I have got to know over the antenatal period . This is not always possible if labour occurs spontaneously or unexpectedly. If I was unavailable, one of my colleagues within the team for “personal patient cover” will try and be present, but this is not guaranteed either, especially if labours occurs too quickly or if it is totally uncomplicated. This team comprises consultants and some specialists who are awaiting a consultant post.
